One on One with Carolina Herrera

Singapore has quickly become Southeast Asia’s fashion hub in recent years with global designers and fashion houses presenting their collections in the Lion City, the latest one being Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel. At the recently concluded Audi Fashion Festival, one of the pillars of the Asia Fashion Exchange, designer Carolina Herrera and her daughter Carolina Herrera de Baez were in town to present their collections for both Carolina Herrera and the diffusion line, CH.

Carolina sat down with Audi Fashion Festival Creative Director Colin McDowell and talked about her first visit to Singapore and about her collection.

“I am showing ‘real clothes’. Sometimes, shows are no longer about the clothes but about the shows themselves, it’s become a spectacle. For Singapore’s Audi Fashion Festival, I am showing a bit of the Carolina Herrera collection from New York. The show is something new because the collection from New York was inspired by music. I collaborated with an English composer called Tom Hodge. We took the Beethoven concerto and he arranged the piece of music for the collection [appropriately entitled Capriccio for Carolina] before I designed the collection. It had drama, and the collection was inspired by the melancholy of the music. It was quite amazing because it was very different. I was inspired by the music before the collection came out.”

Prior to Carolina Herrera formally opening the Audi Fashion Festival with the presentation of both the CH and Carolina Herrera collections that first night, I went backstage for a brief and casual one- on- one conversation with the regal designer.

Ingrid (IC): Carolina, I need to know– and many, many inquiring minds want to know as well, what is your secret to looking young and beautiful?

Carolina (CH): *Laughs* You flatter me! But the answer and key to that is really happiness! It’s always about being happy and finding happiness in every little thing that you do. Working on the collections and with my daughters always makes me happy. And after Singapore, I am off to see my grandchildren and they keep me feeling young and happy!

IC: I have read that you dote on your grandchildren and let them do whatever they want when they’re with you! You’re a fun grandmum!

CH: Yes! We are a big family, I have 12 grandchildren. Oh yes, I do spoil them and I think my daughters always get afraid once the children go back to them after spending time with me because they will find it hard to discipline them again! *laughs*

IC: I’m a “bag hag” and I really liked the Mini Matryoshka bag created by your daughter Carolina.

CH: I’m pleased to hear that and so will she! Did you know that we created a Matryoshka bag for Singapore, it has an orchid on it! You must go see it at our boutique in Marina Bay Sands!

IC: I definitely need to check that out! I know you began designing your own label after having been prodded or prompted by Diana Vreeland. But have you always wanted to be in the fashion industry?

CH: When I was younger, my mother used to dress me up, but as I grew older, I already knew I wanted to be well- dressed or rather look my best at all times. I have always had this desire to be in fashion. And here I am now, doing what I love!

IC: How do you find fashion today?

CH: Fashion is not only frivolous, it has to be for your everyday life. I love that fashion is ever changing, as the world is now so different from what it was before. I do find it inspiring to see different styles of women nowadays. There will always be that odd one or two that I might not quite understand but I believe it is the diversity which makes fashion and style interesting overall.

IC: What defines a Carolina Herrera woman?

CH: The Carolina Herrera woman is active, modern, sophisticated and feminine, and lives in the “now”. She is aware and makes firm choices. Her style is projected through the clothes she wears and not change every 6 months. She has an emotional and intellectual connection with her clothes.

And ta-dah, token photo with Carolina after my interview :) <3 <3

ch23That’s all for now! I’m in Hong Kong and will be posting some photos tomorrow after my visit to Art Basel :)

The events of this week peak tonight with the opening of Philippine Fashion Week. I wanted to share with you peeps that I will be walking the runway for SM Ladies Fashion tonight– as a fashion blogger (hookay, let’s be clear about me walking not as a model but as a blogger, so please please don’t expect me to sashay- shante and werq it like it’s RuPaul’s supermodel song LOL).

I am very honored to be asked to walk for this show, but at the same time quite petrified because I really dread walking down the ramp–I did a runway walk once for the Mega Magazine Most Stylish event and swore never to do it again LOL. It was a very scary experience. So hopefully I don’t fall flat on my face tonight and embarrass my friends and family (who will hear about this if it happens, and subsequently disown me for the embarrassment I caused them LOL).

That said though, I wanted to mention that the 2 outfits I will wear tonight from SM Ladies Fashion are real nice and indeed reflective of my style– so I am excited to wear them :)  So if there will be peeps attending tonight’s show, please do come and say hello to me (and maybe offer me a glass of wine or bubbly to calm my nerves hahaha).

More on SM Ladies’ Fashion Show for Philippine Fashion Week later– I will be live tweeting/ instagramming, so please don’t hesitate to check both my twitter and instagram feeds :)

Perspex Mania!

I’ve been hit by the Perspex (and lucite) bug and am in love with anything transparent!

Zara has come up with a perspex box clutch and has quickly sold out. I wanted one because perspex clutches pose a good bag editing challenge- and you become a good bag content curator ;)

One such bag is this Charlotte Olympia Perfume Bottle Clutch

IMG_20130521_100139

This clutch is too cute in person– it is shaped like the Chanel No.5 bottle :) There are actually other versions (I’ve seen a blue one as well) of this perfume clutch but this is really my favorite piece and is not the 1st time I wrote about it :)

If you have been looking for a statement perspex clutch, I highly recommend this piece! It is one of the best of its kind so far :)

Fringes of CH Carolina Herrera

It’s truly incredible that Singapore was able to play host to show the FW2013 collection of a few of the major designer houses through the Asia Fashion Exchange.

It was through one of the pillars of Asia Fashion Exchange that I saw the bag collection of CH Carolina Herrera for FW2013.

This beautiful red tote combines design with function. Like the designer herself, the fringe tote is tastefully executed.

Anyway I’m on the road now so let me blog again in a bit when I can use my laptop. I’m getting dizzy ;)

Singapore: Carolina Herrera FW 2013- 14

The highlight of last night’s event during the Asia Fashion Exchange- Audi Fashion Festival was the Carolina Herrera show. Carolina has shown her FW2013- 14 collection during New York Fashion Week last February but this was the first time she presented it in Asia, and in Singapore at that. I’m quite amazed because Singapore has become the fashion hub of Asia, what with the recently concluded show of Chanel also held in the Lion City.

I’ve been so fortunate to see Carolina backstage before her show (back to back show actually) to interview her and to personally congratulate her on her recent collections (more on the interview tomorrow, with photos from her recent CH collection as well). For now though, I’d like to share some images from the Carolina Herrera show last night.

Click on the thumbnails below to enlarge the photos.

And while this collection was meant for Fall Winter (and here in Southeast Asia we don’t have Fall/Winter), there were some beautiful pieces that would work perfectly well for us ladies in the tropics :) The collection was carefully put together– reflecting the very DNA of Carolina Herrera: modern, feminine, refined, and yes, glamorous.

Interesting to note too that Carolina worked on this collection after having put together the musical score for the show. She centered the collection around the music of Beethoven as she was inspired by it. And the modern superwoman of style was born, ready for Fall and Winter 2013!

Bag Review: Valentino Studded Bag

Valentino has beautiful rockstud shoes– both heeled and flats.

But oh my, what’s up with the bags– in particular this one?

valentinotegu

This Valentino Tegu Studded Bagicon just baffles me. It’s too busy. Textured and too many elements all in one bag. The studs, the side bow and those double twistlocks on the double flaps. We women can never have enough pockets on the bags but this bag is just all wrong.  :(

Even if this bag goes on sale and slashes its price further, I will not buy it. Would you?

I think it is essential for girls and women to see and celebrate what is possible. I hope that through CHIME we can help the voices calling for change to become so loud that they cannot be ignored.

Today I’m off to listen to a series of talks about the current retail landscape in Asia as well as keeping consumers’ brand loyalty. I’m actually really grateful to be here for this festival because as a writer, it gives me an even more thorough understanding of the relationship between the retailer and the consumer as well as the role that media plays in all this. It’s all incredibly interesting and very informative!

Singapore: Asia Fashion Exchange Day 1

Wow, yesterday was a very packed day that I had not been able to squeeze in some time to blog :( Today was just as busy, but was an incredibly fun day which began at 8am.  I flew out to Singapore to attend the Asia Fashion Exchange 2013 :)

Met the lovely Asia Fashion Exchange team as well as the representatives of the Singapore Tourism Board who had welcomed media with a very nice Italian lunch at Garibaldi on Purvis Street. Such a beautiful street this is– I had only passed by this street a number of times during my visits to Singapore, but this was the first time I had actually walked around this area :)

SG-1

After lunch, we were taken to Paragon Mall to visit Raoul. This is a brand that has been making good with apparel of late, and I zeroed in on some bags which I find quite nice :)

The classic tote with an envelop pocket in neutral tones– something that would work very well for work and for the weekend!

SG-2

I’m loving these pastel accordion clutch bags which also work as a cross body and as a shoulder bag. These accordion bags will make us all better bag editors :)

SG-3

We proceeded to Parco by Millenia Walk. I have never been to this part of town and I am so surprised and amazed– Parco Next Next houses a lot of apparel and merchandise made by young and upcoming Singaporean designers! I’ve always wondered why I never see these designers along Orchard Road. It is rather sad that tourists had no way of knowing where to find these designers in the past, and I’m so glad that I’ve been given this opportunity to share the information with you all.

There is difficulty for these young designers to be in larger malls on the main Orchard Road because the malls give priority to the global brands. I can tell you this much– these designers deserve to be in a space that is accessible to tourists because they are all so talented! Here are some of the brands:

I’m so in love with this chain necklace :) It’s too cute!!!

sg11I have to get ready for the Audi gala night now, but I will be discussing these more in detail when I get back in tonight! Hope you enjoyed the photos though :) Do follow me on instagram.com/thebaghag as I will be posting real- time photos there while I’m in Singapore :)

Bag Review: Saint Laurent Sac De Jour Tote

Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there :) Had a very relaxing time this afternoon and am grateful for the day of rest. But I have to pause and write a post before I enjoy this staycation at my DB’s *dear brother* place (haha someone’s having too much fun).

The Saint Laurent Sac de Jour Leather Top Handle Tote reminds me of the Hermes shadow birkin.

yslblackbox

It’s not exactly the same, but it has the makings of a classic bag that is meant to last a long time.

yslboxred

The thing about Saint Laurent bags is, the leather is a bit on the shiny side and is more prone to scratches. However I like that this particular bag has compartments and that your things won’t get lost inside the bag abyss. Fashion editors have been toting Saint Laurent bags of late, cementing its status as an undeniably chic bag :)

The Saint Laurent Sac de Jour Leather Top Handle Tote is available for immediate purchase HERE. Go ahead, it’s Mother’s Day. Allow yourself this indulgence! :)
