Food & Travel: Giando in Hong Kong

Yes, I am back in the city that makes everyone feel unproductive enough, Hong Kong! Hahaha, it’s true– every single time that I am in Hong Kong, I feel like I have to rush, rush, rush. Everyone seems to be rushing to go somewhere. It came to a point when even I found myself running across the MTR (train) platform to another platform because everyone else around me was doing the same– and really, I had no idea why I broke into a run since I wasn’t exactly on a tight schedule! 😉 After a wonderful day yesterday, we ended up having dinner at chef Gianni Caprioli’s restaurant, Giando. The restaurant is always full on weekend nights and brunch so it’s good to book way ahead of time. We made a last minute reservation through Chef Gianni himself and luckily he was able to accommodate us– when we got to the restaurant, it was full, full, full! Gianni concocted a special appetizer plate for us (haha no photo, sorrryyy– ate it all before realizing I didn’t take photos) before we were served the main course. Bistecca alla Fiorentina giando2 Served with marinated vegetables, to be drizzled with Giando’s special balsamic vinegar giando1 And then Gianni came over with a wooden box which contained a special prize: black truffles!! He shaved truffles onto the fettuccine… oh yummm… giando3 He just shaved and shaved and shaved. I was like, OMG he covered the plate with black truffles! This has to be the most generous serving of black truffles on pasta, ever!!! giando5It was food-gasmic as you can probably imagine. I ate the pasta in complete silence, savoring each bite… Mmmm…. I was so full from all that, but Gianni had more in mind for us. He served us his homemade gelato with shavings of this extremely special chocolate (I didn’t catch what he was saying anymore because hello, food coma after all that amazing food), and poured out Frangelico (my favorite liqueur too) over the gelato. Food-gasm has not ended just yet!! giando4  This was without a doubt, the BEST gelato I’ve ever had. THE BEST. If you happen to be in Hong Kong for a few days and want to have excellent Italian food, Giando is a MUST try, hands down! Giando is located on the 1/F, The Fleet Arcade, 1 Lung King Street, Fenwick Pier, Wan Chai. It’s about a 10 minute walk from Pacific Place (really easy access with the bridge walkways). If you don’t like walking, you can always take a taxi. Oh and a little caveat about the location though– unless you got to the restaurant by private car, it’s a little difficult to get a taxi around the area, so it might be helpful if you have the number of a cab company so you can either call for a taxi shortly before you finish your meal. You can also ask the restaurant to call a taxi for you ahead of time. That said, Giando’s is really worth the trip!! x TheBagHag
