The Fabella Visit

Ugh , had trouble accessing blogger last night. It must’ve been my connection. Or Blogger. Anyway, I’m back 🙂 I am currently at my friend’s office trying to use the internet, after having visited Fabella Hospital with Cecile, Candy, Rea, Pia, and Shiela.

Grabe, Fabella was flooded. When we got there, there were 2 new moms and their immediate family members (one or 2 of them) who were recently discharged from the hospital with their newborns, and they had to wade through the ankle- deep flood waters to get to their ride (one mom + baby + family member rode a taxi; I’m not sure about the other one).

Fabella was really an emotional experience– all kinds of emotions squeezed into one afternoon.

Elation:I saw a woman “popping”– literally! She gave birth to a baby girl 🙂 And I saw it all (it was perfect timing). It was remarkable.

Frustration and Helplessness: Seeing the premature babies (some were just born at 6 months premature), malnourished baby, and the 2 other babies whose mothers passed away giving birth to them.

Awe: Seeing the “normal” term babies sleeping soundly after they have just been born.

It has been such an emotionally draining day for me. Bottom line, though there was a sense of fulfillment– knowing we are going to be able to help, there is still SO much that needs to be done. We actually went to Fabella to see for ourselves exactly what the hospital needs so we can properly allocate your donations to the purchase of more important equipment. I have a feeling most of our donations will go toward buying equipment for the NICU (neonatal intensive care unit)– more heat lamps were needed. There were also these machines that regulate the doses of medicine for the premature babies– the very kind doctor who took us around mentioned that they were in need of those as well since the machines were pretty much working 24 hours a day nonstop.

Rea Harrow of Moms for Moms (and also of Handy Dandy Diapers– check out the site– http://handydandydiapers.multiply.com) has been tirelessly working to help Fabella, and she has likewise donated several huge packs of organic Moltex OKO diapers today, as the hospital estimates that over 400 diapers are needed daily for the newborns! *On a side note, I really like these diapers– if I had a baby, I’d have used them on him/her as they’re also very eco- friendly, and are soft to the touch (I checked them out earlier). They’re also skin- friendly (which is very important)!*

Anyway, in the 5 minutes I was at the delivery ward, 4 babies were born. It was surreal. Can you imagine the number of babies born at Fabella every hour? You do the math!

Oh– for future donors, here’s some important information– Fabella doesn’t want to take in baby bottles as contributions, as the hospital is actually a staunch advocate of breastfeeding. So to our Baby Bottle donors, we will be channeling the donations to the orphanage that Moms for Moms is also helping– I will get you peeps more information on this. If I’m not mistaken, it’s an orphanage run by the sisters of Mother Theresa.

I will post some photos of the visit here soon. I hope you all understand if I don’t post photos of the babies from NICU. I don’t want to invade their “privacy”– I’ve already intruded earlier (gosh I really still am quite disturbed by this– that I “hung around” NICU. This is really still all new to me, and it will take some time for me to “digest” all this. *Sigh*) It really has been a good day, overall. Even if it rained nonstop.

Anyway, I’ll keep this blog short. I don’t want to use my friend’s office resources 😀 *She needs this computer now hahaha*

Please say a little prayer to those premature and sick babies of Fabella. Some of them really, really need our love and prayers. (There were abandoned babies, and orphaned babies… *sigh*)

  1. What you’re doing for Fabella is so admirable, I pray that God will help you to reach out to these babies and their mothers. God bless you, you’re friends, and everybody else helping in this cause.
    🙂

  2. Kudos to people like you and your friends. God bless you all!

I wonder though why the government is not doing anything about these kind of places. It is heart wrecking and yet they have the audacity to spend millions on material things or worse eat at some fancy NYC restos.

There are so much excess in the world, and even amongst us, why can’t we make an effort to put our excesses in the right places. If we do this, I’m sure the world will be a better place.

  4. @ Anon: Thank you so much!

@ Mrs.A: They actually need industrial grade breast pumps– let me see what we can do with your avent pump. If they can be of use to them, I’ll be posting more info here on the blog 🙂

@ Zharmagne: I agree. Some people who have excesses choose to spend their money for themselves or for their family. Can’t really fault them for it as it’s their own money to begin with 🙂 But of course sometimes I understand how you can’t help but wonder why they can’t cough up at least just Php 100 of their money to give back. It’s not going to kill them 😀 As for the government, I can only shake my head in wonder as well. Like you, I am just as stumped 🙁

Maria A.: Please contact me at tresormakati@gmail.com and THANK YOU!

@Jason: Good question. Some people develop allergies from latex. There is a type of protein in natural rubber latex that can eventually give you allergies if you are exposed to latex long enough. You can get skin allergies like contact dermatitis which can cause itchiness, redness, irritation to your skin. The sad thing about latex is, it’s present in SO MANY things that we use everyday. 🙁

@Anon about bag resellers: I’m really sorry but I honestly cannot speak for the authenticity of the bags that other resellers are selling simply because I’ve never been to their stores to check out their merchandise. I just advise people to know their resellers. It’s really all about trust at the end of the day. They have to earn it from consumers.

  5. Hi Mrs T!

I truly admire you ladies for what you are doing for Fabella, you ladies are truly a blessing. I have heard stories about Fabella and the poor babies. Kudos to you! And I hope I can give my share one of these days!

  6. Dear Mrs. T,

This is my first time to write a comment in your blog.
I have been reading your blogs “in between my clinic hours” as your Bag Stories relieve me of the day’s stress.
God bless you and your friends who are helping Fabella.
May I know how I can send my “little help” so that I, in my own small way, can also contribute to the needs of Fabella patients thru you?
Im also an obgyn but I am in a private practice in our business center cities.
I felt that thru your “Fabella Project” I can reach out to the “other side” of our practice.
May you and your friends continue to be a BLESSING TO OTHERS.

  7. @ Appledumplings: thank you. Your prayers for all the babies are good enough. You know, i thought i was going to remain unaffected when I went to the hospital, but that night, I had so much trouble sleeping. I saw those premature babies and sick babies at the NICU and it just really got me so sad 🙁

@ Baghagynecologist: Oh wow! THANK YOU for your offer!! Please contact me at tresormakati@gmail.com.

For now, Moms for Moms’ Rea Harrow is still waiting for word from Dr. Juico of Fabella for the list of things needed. We do know Fabella needs an unlimited supply of diapers for all the babies. But if you’re looking into equipments, we need to wait it out from Dr. Juico’s list. I know also they need those industrial grade breastmilk pumps, which Cecile has so kindly purchased (for a really good price too)! But please do tell me if you have other plans of helping– we would greatly appreciate your input and help! THANK YOU!!!!
