The collections of Metro Wear 2

I was told that Metro Wear 2 was not as well attended as the first one, but all the same, it was well attended. Proof of that was, there weren’t enough seats to accommodate all the guests.

Here’s how silly I was. So I was one of the earliest “guests”, but where did I seat myself in the end? All the way in the back *muwahaha am I stupid or what?* I could’ve grabbed a seat in the front row along with the social heavyweights, but hey, I was a nobody (and psst, at least I acknowledge that fully) and I was afraid the ushers will, well, ask me to move back *hehe so I spared myself the embarrassment*.

The show started a little past 7:30pm (and I can’t believe I was there an hour early haha… Loser!).

Lulu Tan Gan’s collections were the first to be unveiled.I particularly like this outfit on the left
Katrina Goulbourn- Feist showed her collection next. I loved the first dress– purple (natch!). It was really pretty.

But the succeeding dresses? I’ve seen her past work and have always admired her, but this collection just left me at a loss for words. This red outfit had that Azzedine Alaia look, but I think the ill-fit of the top made it look… *gulp*And I was definitely not the only one who shared this *gulp* sentiment. The ladies in front of me and behind me were all aghast at what they saw. While Katrina’s use of bright fabrics was warmly received and lauded by most, it was the design and the construction of (most of) the clothes that made people blink again. Everyone was whispering– to my left, right, front, back, and center. And I might very well be the only person bold enough to put all that in writing here. I actually feel sorry for the designer. But truth it be told, there was cause for the whispers– gold buttons that run down the front of a mid-rib cut top with flamenco-ish sleeves with a short pouffy skirt that would have showed “gut”? (So 80s… thank goodness no shoulder pads) No love lost there.

It was not all bad of course,
there was another piece that was quite nice
(sorry for the grainy photo– but you get the idea :D)

But hey, what do I know, I’m no fashion editor, and I’m quite well known for wearing clothes that would get me arrested by the fashion police anyway. 😀 Ask the real fashionistas what they thought of the collection.

Jun Escario was last to show his work, and I enjoyed almost everything he made. His pieces were beautiful in front and left a lasting impression as the models walked back
(oh hey look it’s TimY!)

This gown was stunning, worn by top model (and also photographer) JoAnn Bitagcol.
I loved the jewel tones of the collection… Sigh… I wish I can be as lithe as these models. The clothes looked so good on them!

Overall, Metro Wear 2’s collections were not half bad. At least we do have designers showing their work. Imagine if no designer ever dared show his/ her craft anymore for fear of criticism.
But talking about criticism, I don’t think anyone (anyone meaning editors/ writers) has the galls to write scathing reviews of the clothes that get featured. I was told (yes and I almost fell off my seat after hearing this) that one of the more seasoned lady designers actually pays publicists/ writers (a lot of money too) to write good things about her collection. This is really news to me. No one ever paid me to write good reviews about their “stuff” *hahaha am I soliciting or what?! muwahaha pathetic, talk about moral highground!*

But that is really sad, because there would never be impartial reviews. A friend had recalled that one of the local fashion magazine’s past fashion editor left almost denunciatory comments about a popular young designer’s collection some time ago. A pretty brazen act that was, but then again, wouldn’t you, the reader, rather read an honest and impartial review of a collection than a sugar- coated one (even if the clothes were really nothing great to write home about)?

Sigh, that discussion is really up for grabs. But hey, this is a bag blog, so I will just stick to what I know more of, than speak about something that isn’t really up my alley 😀 Thoughts to ponder, hags!

The next Metro Wear will be on October 23, 7pm at the Loft. If you have time, please do go! I am told it will be a wonderful collection featuring Ivar Aseron and Joey Samson (did I miss another designer?).

  1. i completely admire people like you who are not afraid of expressing their opinions (so rare to see here in little ol’ Manille). Some people would just like to kiss ass (and I’m sure you know who I mean 🙂 And these people cannot accept anything negative about their work. I mean, how will they improve if all they want to hear are” Great job! Good Work!”. Tsk tsk…so sad. And these are the people who are supposed to “educate” us on fashion. Hope you continue this kind of writing (coz i know we’ll do too *hint*). This city really needs more brave souls like you 🙂

  2. give me impartial reviews anytime. How can designers push the envelope if people are constantly propping up their egos (undeserved as it may be). And if the threat of criticism is their reason for not putting their work out there, then a change of profession should be considered. Marc Jacobs must be paralyzed with fear every fashion week, but that doesn’t stop him from churning out a collection season after season.

  3. Mrs.T I agree with you 100% and backup your review of their collection was. I was there myself upon invitation of a friend who was a client of the Goulbourns. I was also very disapointed at what I saw and so was my friend. Trina normally has great design but that all fell through for this collection. As far as your impartial review is concerned you didn’t even murder any designer by your critiquing! You were still being nice =) you still found something positive to write about her collection. I also found Lulu TanGans collection bland. I was much happier with the opening of the Metrowear series. Rajo’s collection was fantastic. I was invited to that by a client of Rhett Eala =) Too bad for me I dont have connections in magazines like you to get invites =)

  4. ugh! what’s up with that red dress? the back looks like it’s held together by a piece of cardboard wrapped in aluminum foil! disappointing…
