It must be all about toning down “luxury” during the global financial crisis.
But what is this exactly? 
A luxurious Hermes birkin devoid of any hardware? Is recession hitting the luxury brand hard? Are they cost- cutting? Is this Hermes’ new bridge line featuring the “cheaper” birkin?
Nah, it’s just Hermes F/W 2009’s version of the birkin. I wonder though if this will ever make it to the sales floors of Hermes.
If they do, I wonder– will they be significantly cheaper?
I personally don’t like the bag. It’s as if someone had snuffed the life out of this iconic bag (and left it for dead). But then, dress it up with a twilly, and it just might become likable! Sometimes, we hafta be more creative with bags that lack that special something (in this case, hardware hehe). 😀
Which then begs the question: Would you still pay top dollars to own a hardware-less birkin?

You might be missing the humor of it. It’s a trompe-l’oeil. The unreal straps are embossed on the bag. Look closely again and you will see that the straps are quite flat and not dangling. You might have missed that.
It’s cute, but design has gotten a bit too witty for me. Visual puns are cute, but they get tired especially when it seems that every designer is doing it. For instance, Chanel’s leather shopping bag, Vuitton’s leather laundry bags of a few seasons ago, Longchamp’s take on Rene Magritte, and now this. Being cute and tongue-in-cheek seems to be the new design route. 🙂

i quite like this trompe l’oeil bass-relief effect. looks almost sculptural. its probaly lighter and definitely easier to get in and out of too.

JPG has succeeded in fooling me with that hardware-less birkin :). It is very tongue-in-cheek indeed. And yes, deluxeduck, definitely easier to get things in and out of the bag too! I hope the price is “friendly”.
