Goyard + The “New” Handbag?

Whee, allow me to just share a moment of elation and pride about my work. Even for just a brief moment 🙂 *You can rain on my parade after*. If you can grab a copy of November’s Metro Magazine (with Dawn Zulueta on the cover), you can read all about Goyard and why women are so in love with the brand. Yes, this baghag wrote about it *beams beams*, and featured three Goyard lovers. I had a bit more info on my original article which was edited for the magazine, but I won’t post that complete article just yet. Just buy a copy of Metro and see for yourself! Here’s another photo. It made me salivate like a Pavlovian dog hahaha.Hehe my photos are terrible, so you should just buy the magazine 🙂 Oh and I also want to credit Goyard.com for the additional information about the brand’s history.

Preview Magazine’s Liz Uy and Giselle Go also featured Tresorie’s blue Goyard St. Louis PM. Indeed, while the brand is not officially in the Philippines, the brand has already “arrived”. And off topic, since I mentioned Preview, I also espied some of D! Luxe pieces featured alongside Vintage Restore bags. Congratulations girls 🙂

So wait, I got engrossed reading the Preview article written by IHT’s Suzy Menkes. What’s this hullabaloo about jewelry being the “New” handbag? *Major pout* Just when we thought that we were getting used to the idea of dropping our life savings into one bag *hehe ok, no actually we are not used to that. I take it back– we will never get used to it– we’re not really that nutty to get used to it… crap ok I’m babbling again, my bad!*. Jewelry is actually much worse than bags because they can go up to the millions! Thank Gawd we don’t have Fred Leighton, Garrard, JAR, De Grisogono here. I’d be the leader of that bandwagon of ladies whose look scream “rich but broke” (i.e. wear beautiful clothes, jewelry, carry a nice handbag but have absolutely no money in the wallet– only wads of credit card charge slips hahaha… sounds familiar? *cough ME*).

Anyway, for the jewelry afficionados, now is your time to *ahem* shine, although jewelry’s been “it” for a long time. Handbags just took precedence for a time after the birth of the Luella Bartley Gisele bag, then the uber famous Balenciaga motorcycle bag, that most wanted Chloe Paddington… Oprah Magazine’s asst. fashion editor PJ Pascual noted that a lot of chic NY ladies would wear just one exquisite piece of jewelry (i.e. statement earrings) to complete their look. No more “piling it up”. It’s one piece that would command the look of the night.

In Manila, for that real bling “fix”– modern contemporary and classic, there’s Janina and Jul Dizon Jewellery Salon at the Mezzanine of The Peninsula Hotel Manila. It’s hard to tear yourself from those stores once you’re in it *hello, serious eye candy!!*. You realize, oh crap! What about those parchment- colored Bottega bags of Spring/Summer 2008? How nice too that the zipper goes all the way down.
This dove gray bugatti bag is also so very nice.*Sigh* I looove Bottega Veneta bags because the leather is oh so soft and buttery (Bottega photos from style.com). But oh the idea of the bling swinging on your ears hehehe… *I know, I’m a bad influence on you peeps haha! But what’s life without an appreciation for all things beautiful– and most often, expensive, right? We are all entitled!!*

If you are into charming antique pieces, there are the exquisite necklaces that Daphne Paez makes. Her handpainted enamel medallions are all beautifully set in 14k gold. I mean, luxe doesn’t get any better than this, right? If you’re getting jewelry, go for the bigger pieces but ones that don’t necessarily break the bank (there are other stones too, not just diamonds hehe). I like my jewelry either real modern contemporary, or totally vintage. I like classics too, but I gravitate towards pieces that are unique and different–a bit in-your-face.

The pieces from I. Benjamin at Firma & Felicity are just that– “in-your-face”. (sorry I plugged, but it’s sorta in line with what I’m talking about. Promise this shameless plugging won’t be done too often. Forgive forgive! *smooch*)

But hey, don’t despair if you don’t have all the moolah in the world for the “new” handbag (how funny for jewelry to be called the new handbag, non?) there are also some cheap and chic alternatives too. I embrace costume jewelry when I have no budget for real bling (which is actually often too). From dainty pieces, to bolder ones. Lucky for me, DCV’s pieces (D! Luxe @ Tresorie) satisfy my bling cravings instantly (because we share the same store space, the pieces are within my reach haha *and within my budget too*).

But oh how tough a dilemma could this be. Jewelry or bags? Bags or jewelry? Bahh! Just get both. And then go on a purchase ban for the next few months *or years, heaven forbid haha* Who says we can’t enjoy life this way? We live in the day and age where we are entitled to have what we want (as long as it doesn’t border on absurdity or ostentation) because we work darned hard for our money. We can have our cake and eat it too– icing and all 🙂 *Muwahaha women of the world, raise your right hand!!*

P.S. Congratulations to Nullah. They’ve revamped their store (Ground floor, Doña Consolacion Bldg. 122 Jupiter St Makati) and we just went there a few hours ago and found ourselves buying clothes! Oh my, clothes… ok don’t get me started on clothes… *Muwahaha* Enough on the new “IT” (it= expense) 😀

xx

  1. I enjoy this post much because of all the jewels. I actually spend more on jewels than bags. My mother said more value in the end. But I am also a bag freak thanks to you now. =D I like that earring of Janina- is that a carved coral buddha? Its really unique. And I Benjamin ring is so different too. Like you though I have a small budget for bling, so I will visit D Luxe at Tresor to see what I can get with what I have ha ha. Nice post , keep up the great writeup!

  3. Hi ms T! to share… I buy preview every month but when I read the cover one of the topics was “jewelry is the new handbag” I had to re-read it again because this is what i know… ” high end designer handbags are the new jewelry” its like having a high end designer bag and its an instant luxury recognition, just my opinion, i guess… I will buy metro mag because you wrote an article about a goyard and i’m targetting to own one by next year!

    cgr =)

  4. Blairbitch: Thanks a lot 🙂

anonymous: For more info on Daphne Osena’s creations of antique and one-of-a kind charm necklaces, please email info@daphneosena.com

cgr: totally feel you there– I had to reread the article too 🙂 But I aint complaining much, because true enough there aren’t a lot of drop dead bags lately.

josephgortich: thanks for the compliment. No one wants to hire this baghag, unfortunately *bawl* hehehe…

samantha: yes the Janina earrings are made of coral (Buddha carving) and turquoise pendelopes. Beautiful isnt it? You should bring your mom to Janina’s joaillerie salon. She’ll love the place. I love it. It’s practically my second home haha.
