Food Blog: A Perfect Italian Meal

It’s a Saturday, so it’s Food Post Day 🙂 Today’s food post is all about one of the most charming restaurants I’ve ever been to– a place called Donna Sofia in Sorrento, introduced by our wonderful Italian guide Giovanna.
Giovanna with her friend, Donna Sofia’s partner owner, Lina
To get there, we had to take a mini bus (of Donna Sofia) because of the really narrow streets that led to the restaurant. When we got there, we had to walk through this beautiful lemon grove.

So sorry, apparently I never had a photo of the lemon grove without me in it 🙁

We got there early! I’m actually glad we did, I was able to take photos without diners getting disturbed 🙂 The restaurant is beautiful. The interior was all about Sofia Loren!

So many photos of Sofia Loren!

Very good wine selection! And Limoncello 🙂

We chose to stay beside the courtyard for the light

I love the composition of this photo. Chanced upon this 🙂

And the food porn + gastronomic orgasm *hehe for lack of a better term!* begins!

Fresh tomato + basil bruschetta

 This was THE BEST!!!

Deep fried zucchini flowers

The texture on this was unparalleled–  the initial crunch, the soft, almost delicate flower “petal”, and then the smooth richness of the filling was worth writing home about.  (I should try making this at home– with squash flowers since we can’t normally get zucchini flowers in Manila)

MmMMmmmm… I had 3 of these.

Calamares

This went wonderfully well with the white wine we had

I was never a fan of polenta (I actually really don’t care for polenta at all), but this dish made me rethink it.

Eggplant Parmigiana, my mom’s favorite. Incidentally did you know that eggplant parmigiana can actually induce labor in pregnant women? Here’s a story (and a recipe) about it– a legend or not, if I were pregnant, I wouldn’t take my chances, unless I’m overdue :D)
I really miss this dish!

And then the Spaghetti Alla Vongole

We each had a small serving.

I thought the pasta wasn’t salty enough. I had to add a pinch of salt, and then it was alright.

By the way our meal was personally picked out by the chef, so everything that was being served to us was the best of the restaurant. And everything was served in perfect portions!

This breaded fish fillet was exceptional. Very lightly breaded and lightly fried, it was very fresh and almost “fragile”. I’ve never had breaded fish THIS good. And to pair it with fennel, it was perfection!!

Toss up between this and the Zucchini flowers= my favorite dishes!

And for dessert, this molten chocolate cake which was really rich but just had the right amount of sweetness.

Decadent, Sinful!

Now THIS was the perfect Italian meal. It had that home- cooked feel to it. And now that I’ve written up about it, it actually reminded me of a restaurant my family and I ate at last year in Saint Petersburg– a restaurant called Teplo. Fun times there too– plus the fact that we were the first Filipino group to have ever eaten there 🙂 *I even placed a “flag” on the Philippines on their world map– haha, I tacked it in Mindanao area :D*
So yes, Donna Sofia is definitely a restaurant worth going back to a second time (and a third, and a fourth)! This restaurant was really a far cry from all the “tourist trap” restaurants in the center of Sorrento. So if you are planning to pass by Sorrento during your Italian sojourn, you cannot miss this restaurant. For more information on Donna Sofia, visit their website here

Walked out of the restaurant and was treated to this view

Mount Vesuvius in the distance!

What a way to end the visit to Capri- Sorrento! 🙂
