Travelog: Thebaghag EATS in Singapore (part 3 of day 1)

PJ picked MC and I up at our hotel to go to the jetty that would lead us to this “island” that he was talking about. I was soo sleepy. I was dozing off in the car, while MC and PJ caught up on work chitchat. I only sorta woke up when we got to the jetty (Sorry guys, I was really just THAT “gone” 😀 and the shopping trip for the day tired this baghag wannabe out!)

This was the jetty that would lead us to gastronomic heaven. The thought of food made my mouth water (I was THAT hungry. Hungry+ sleepy= grouchy hehe). We had to take this “bum” boat. That’s PJ with a picnic basket– he tucked away a red and a white (wine) complete with glasses for this trip 🙂 *Oh dear… new equation: Hungry+Sleepy+Drunk= grouchy nutcase 😀 *WOOHOO now THIS has got to get me going!!! hahaha*

I love that the boat is referred to as a “bum” boat 🙂 And don’t ask me why. But the thought of being in a bum boat is appropriate– because I AM a BUM!! We passed by this mini strip of beach where this guy was just waiting for a boat to pass by to create some wave and he can wakeboard (ok that was real sad hehehehe). 😀

The waters were clean and more importantly, they did not smell 🙂 It was actually a pretty pleasant ride to this “island”! I was at first thinking it was off to Sentosa we go, but PJ was like, no, no, this place is rather different. PJ said that he would take his wife here with his kids, but the kids weren’t too hot about the place. But his wife liked this place (and obviously we would relate more to the wife than to the kids hahaha), so MC and I were pretty certain– in fact, we both knew, that the food was going to be good and we were gonna be pretty tipsy after dinner 😀 *muwahaha shopping + drinking= merry merry baghags!!*

I never thought there was a place in Singapore that looked like this. I was very pleased about this little trip we were taking just to have dinner! PJ even gave us these little smiley stickers that repelled mosquitoes in case there were any that night. Ok– we don’t have this in our mountain. I was really amused with them smiley insect repellants 😀

We finally got to our destination. There were old pillings that used to be jetties.

I am beginning to love this beautiful island. It’s called Pulau Ubin. Look at it. It’s beautiful!!
I am smitten with this place and we haven’t even gotten into the island itself. We were still at the jetty 😀But it was enough to tug my heartstrings! I swore to myself that I’d take DH here. I wish he was with us that time!

We walked around the island, and saw all these peeps with all their dogs. This island is self- sustaining. There are 2 gas stations here and to date, apparently there are only about 50 residents here. And no, you can’t go building- happy and construct a nice little villa, because no part of the island is for sale. Thanks to the Singaporean government for preserving this place this way. It is really so quaint, and I love that this is a place that looked like time had forgotten it– and I say this in a really good way. I was really welcoming this change. The Singapore I knew, and the Singapore I am now so privileged to see. I would love to take the kids here one day and just cycle around the island (which is what a lot of visitors here do).

We were going to have dinner at this place called Ubin First Stop Restaurant (+6565432489), run by a local guy named Allaan (who was in red). Allaan later tells us that he hadn’t been to the Philippines in eons. I told him that he should come back! 🙂

Anyway, we started out with white wine. Drinks for everyone!!! *wooohooo!* Perfect to start the dinner, eh? 😀 That’s MC in the floral top 🙂 We drank, as PJ ordered our food. Our host ordered food fit for 12. I swear I had never feasted so much in such a looong time, and I was only too happy to get my fingers dirty with the SUPER sumptuous food!!

Super fresh clams in egg drop sauce and chili (I LOOOOVE this dish!!)
Freshly steamed prawns (dipped with their chili sauce– ugh, killer!!!)
Soysauce steamed garoupa (it was SOOOO fresh!!)

Salt Pepper crabs (oh My Gawd, this will give Kentucky Fried chicken’s slogan a run for its money– THESE crabs were finger-lickin’ good!!!)
Fried Rice (which was just SO perfect with all the above dishes!!)
Oh my gawd. I don’t think I could eat any more, but I just stuffed myself (I ate like there was No tomorrow!!!)

By the time the dinner was over, it was already 9:30pm. Our boat guy was calling Allaan, the owner of the restaurant, to ask if we were done with dinner. We had finished a whole bottle of wine, and couldn’t go on any longer if we had plans to get back to the main island. Boatman was getting antsy, so we had to say goodbye to Pulau Ubin.

It was just definitely one of the best seafood dinners I’ve ever had. And I would come back to this island again for sure, when I head out to Singapore again. The ride home was animated, jokes and all, but for the life of me, I couldn’t really think straight anymore. The bed at Orchard Hotel was calling out to me, and I was just totally deflated– out like a flat tire.

The day after was an even bigger day, more places to shop. So I had to go sleep. By midnight, MC and I were already in dreamland 🙂

THANK YOU, PJ !!!
