Travelog: Cafe Pushkin, fantastic Russian fare!

Cafe Pushkin

came highly recommended by my friends who have already been to Russia. So we had no plans of missing this restaurant. And true to my friends’ words, this restaurant is really a MUST-try!

DH decided to have his birthday lunch at Cafe Pushkin (tell you peeps the lit on this restaurant when I get back). There was a nicely priced lunch set menu– at 750 rubles.

I had the chicken giblets served with jellied mushrooms– with a dollop of pureed beets and horseradish

It was a fantastic appetizer.I especially loved the mushroom jelly!

DH had the herring as appetizer

Then I had the traditional Russian borsch soup, which was surprisingly good!

I didn’t expect to like it but I did. Especially loved how the soup tasted after those dollops of sour cream into the soup– it balanced out the acidity. Strange but true.

For my main course, I decided on the peliminis or the Russian dumplings with minced meat of lamb, beef, and pork.

In reality, this tasted like mini xiao long paos *without the flavourful steaming liquid from the inside*. Or hmmm it could also taste like molo soup without the soup πŸ™‚ What made it different was the pairing with sour cream. I do like this very much πŸ™‚ And it’s very, very filling!

DM had fresh fish.

She said it was really wonderful. It looks it πŸ™‚

For dessert. my Mom decided to order chocolate cake.

DB didn’t want to make too much of a fuss about his birthday, so we didn’t ask for a candle anymore or all that birthday paraphernalia. πŸ™‚

When the bill came, we all had no idea how they calculated our meals. Well coz we can’t understand Cyrillic! (Our guide also joined us for lunch upon my DM’s invitation).

Bottom line though, DB was happy with his meal, and we were only too happy to celebrate it with him πŸ™‚

Happy birthday again, DB!!!:) Cafe Pushkin was topnotch! I give it 3 stars!

  1. I’ve been wanting to try those Russian dumplings since I saw those on Anthony Bourdain’s show. I’m intrigued..

That cake looked like a piece of heaven to me. LMAO

  2. It’s odd that the fantastic borsch paid that much, 1000 rubles is a lot of many in that country, i’m not saying that you got conned but i bet there are a lot of great places in moscow where that soup doesn’t pay more than 250. And usually the traditional peliminis come with the fluid inside.
I’m not from russia, but pretty close from it, so I must agree,a fine cooked russian meal is delicious!
When you get the chance I suggest you to try herring, either fresh or smoked version, both have a really interesting taste πŸ™‚
Best of luck on your trip! – SP
