BAG REVIEW: Tod’s F/W 2009-2010 Collection

It’s a return to the classics with Tod’s latest bag collection for Fall- Winter 2010. While I am tempted to talk about shoes (all I can say is this– the boots of Tod’s are to die for!!!), I will do a bag review first. 🙂

The brand’s iconic bag, the D bag is updated yet again. I was able to take an up close- and-personal look at the new styles and I have to say, I am impressed. If you like bags with a little more “structure”, the D bag might just be for you. I like that you can uncinch the side “locks” . Doing so allows the bag to open into a zippered shopping tote. *Pretty neat feature, eh?* I believe that stylish, multi-functional bags are the bags of today and of the future. Oh and another plus is the detachable shoulder strap. The bag featured above is made of calfskin. While the leather seems a little prone to scratches (usually it’s a toss up– you want a buttery soft leather, you have to make that “sacrifice”. But if you want something a bit more “rigid” looking, then chances are you’ll end up with a scratch-resistant leather), this particular leather is one that would “age” well.

By the way, the D bag also comes in buttery soft lamb shearling leather. This bag is a little smaller than the above camel-colored D bag. If you find yourself spending more time in a cooler climate, then this is a good bag to look into. Unlike other lamb shearling bags, the material incorporation into the design of the bag is very subtle (you don’t see a great deal of “shearlings” all over the bag), and makes a great Fall/ Winter bag.

And of course, thebaghag had to pick out the most expensive bag in the collection as her favorite *horrors haha*. I honestly thought I was looking at a croc-stamped D leather bag in teal. Imagine my shock when I found out that the bag I was loving, was made of croc skin! I love the bag because of the color, and because of the “leather” as compared to calfskin because this particular bag’s leather seems more low maintenance– well, well, well, the know-it-all baghag didn’t know it all. I should’ve known it was croc, but actually didn’t! Pffft 😀

Tod’s has a very interesting black textured leather satchel for this collection. Shaped almost like the classic bugatti, this bag features a unique brass-top trim and a chain/ leather shoulder strap (which is detachable). For me, this is the more versatile bag for the modern working woman. It has a narrow opening but is surprisingly roomy. It has a snap button enclosure and secures your things pretty well. I like this bag (and yes, even if it is black) because this seems like a classic bag that will transcend trends. It is a very basic looking bag but the details are enough to make this bag a classic. I think they should baptize this bag with a proper name and keep this style as a staple in the Tod’s collection 🙂

The model who graciously “worked” this bag has gotten me all convinced that this makes a fantastic everyday bag for someone like me (unemployed woman on the go hahahaha). This large flap bag with the chain strap is made of calfskin leather as well, but has a nice “sheen” finish to it. It is very light, contrary to the fact that the strap is made of “chains”. This slouchy bag is great for the casual gal on the go. I am so liking this! This makes a great traveling bag– a very chic one at that too! This could very well be that perfect alternative to the Hermes evelyne (since the evelyne is smaller and can’t keep bulky things like that light sweater you’d want to carry with you to the plane).

Purple and aqua suede evening bags for baghags? I love the color, but since I’m not very keen on keeping suede bags for long periods of time, I wouldn’t get these. But the colors are really striking and enticing! If you have a nicely “ventilated” closet, it’s ok to go for suede. But if you don’t, I don’t really recommend it as it’s a very high maintenance bag. But oh boy, those colors. *Heart* Tsk 🙁

Apart from test-driving the bags, I also ran into Thefashpack (who was splendid in green), met SSI’s Malu Francisco with PR maven Ginggay dela Merced,
Editor JR Isaac,
Preview’s
very svelte editor-in-chief Pauline Suaco Juan
with the croc D bag *top shelf* (incidentally tonight is the Preview Ball, peeps :D)

It was great to have been invited to check out the latest bags from Tod’s. I’m actually very impressed with the new bags– this coming from someone who never really looked at Tod’s bags (except for the Pashmy) though I continue to profess my love for the Tod’s driving loafers 😉

Our dinner at Bocarino’s capped a wonderful day.(with SSI’s Malu, Monica, and Nina, Sense & Style’s Hector and AA, Metro Magazine’s Mela, Lifestyle Asia’s Anna *not in photo* and Tod’s PR associate Hannah Ng)

Tod’s bags are available in Manila at Greenbelt 4 and Rustan’s Tower (in Shangri-la Mall). Go check them out!

P.S. They also have a SUPER nice magenta bag on display at Tod’s Greenbelt 4 right now– and it’s the perfect size too! Let me just tell you this– beautiful and functional magenta bags are super difficult to find. Tod’s Gbelt has ONE!! If you have some spare moolah, I would have to prod you to go get it before someone gets to it!

P.P.S. Monica, I want your bag!!! 😀 I carried a Chanel purple lambskin maxi flap to the dinner, while Monica carried her Magenta *!!!!* Pashmy hobo. Since the time I saw the bag, I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it!! 🙁
