I welcome opportunities that allow me to brag about someone’s personal achievements since I have none to speak of on my own. So allow me this little post to talk about my former college classmates in San Francisco who had made their “dreams” come true.

Mahershala Gilmore and I shared a few journalism/ communications classes together back in college. He played basketball for our college team and was a pretty good player. During senior year, I asked him what he planned to do after graduation, and he told me he wanted to pursue a career in acting. I even joked around with him, asking if he wanted to pattern his career after funnyman Eddie Murphy.

Some ten years post- grad, I was pleasantly surprised to see him on a show called The 4400. I was not into sci-fi shows which DH loved to watch, but one time as I watched the credits roll, I noticed an unusual name, one that sounded extremely familiar.

His screen name was Mahershalalhashbaz Ali. I had this feeling that it was Mahershala Gilmore, but wasn’t sure. That was until I saw him onscreen.

I was floored. Excited. I started screaming, “Oh my God Oh my God we were in the same classes together back in college!!”. I even pulled out our college yearbook (yech). And there he was! And now, he’s an actor in Hollywood!

Last year, because of Facebook, I was able to touch base with some of my old mates from college, one of whom included JD Ryan. He too, worked in Hollywood. If you saw Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles TMNT (The Movie) and liked it, credit JD, because he was the film’s overall editor.

And then the movie, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button came out. JD informs me that Mahershala is in it! And he played a good role too. I have yet to see the film, but I’ve already heard from a few other college mates that Mahershala was good. (I’m planning to play hokey to watch this film!!). I am so excited that Mahershela made it to the big screen, finally!!

Sigh, these two people whom I went to college with make me believe that dreams do come true with enough tenacity and hard work. šŸ™‚ Congratulations Mahershala and JD!

I guess I better work hard… I’m not aiming for Hollywood. I just want to be a tai tai šŸ˜‰ *snicker*
