A New Computer? I WANT!!!

I am back to wanting needing a new computer. Seriously! Have you seen MY computer lately? It’s in poor health (aesthetically speaking)! No more letters on the keyboard  (I even bought letter stickers for the keyboard and even those letter got rubbed off already!) and the whole thing’s just dirtyyyy  even after I cleaned it *ewww hahaha*.  Sooooo, I don’t just want a new computer. I NEED ONE!!

Some months back, I got a discount deal for a Vivienne Tam HP Mini 1000 Netbook through my girl
friend with the local ad agency that handles HP. I thought I was going to finally be a windows OS- computer owner (my first non- Mac. I’ve used only Mac computers for as long as I can remember)– the pretty Vivienne Tam red one at that! You see, like phones, I want pretty computers that I can brag bring around *hehehe*. I thought the Vivienne Tam HP Mini fit the bill– it was light, compact, and very pretty!! Let it be known though, that DH was against the whole idea that I buy the HP mini 1000 from the very beginning because it was Windows- based and was therefore more prone to viruses. DH is actually a Windows- user at his office, and a Mac user at home, so I guess he knew more than I did. But I still didn’t listen.  Besides, I got a fairly good discount for the netbook and it was sooo purrrrdyyy 😀 After I wrote out the cheque to the ad agency for the purchase, I happily took her home 🙂 *DH even drove me to fetch “her” :D*
Alas, the computer gods had something else in mind for me. The whole problem with the HP Mini 1000 Vivienne Tam netbook happened on the night I brought the pretty red thing home. I was leaving town the next day and had hoped to bring “her” with me (since I did need a more compact “travel” laptop, hence my reason for getting that netbook in the first place). DH turned on the netbook to check if everything is ok, but he couldn’t even get it to start! We didn’t even get to the part where I’m supposed to register ownership. DH (ever the tech dork) tried to troubleshoot. After all, he claims to have had his share of Windows errors in his office computer. The problem with the the HP netbook? The operating system was not installed properly or was corrupted *sob, what rotten luck, right? :(*. And the only way to take care of the problem was to reinstall  the program/ operating system. This is the most unfortunate part: reinstalling the OS required a CD/DVD drive (since the OS recovery system is on a CD *or DVD*). But duh, the netbook does not have an internal CD/DVD drive. And since we were Mac users, we had no spare external CD/DVD drive. All were internal– inside our Macs.
Anyway to make a long story short, DH and I both got so frustrated because there was just no way around getting the problem solved in such a short time (plus we were NOT buying an external CD drive just for that!). So I just requested that the cheque payment I  made not be deposited, and that they can just get the netbook back since it was really not working after several tries to get the OS system to load.  I’m glad that DH checked the computer right when we got home– because if it were up to me, I’d turn the computer on only when I will already use it– when I’m already traveling! You won’t believe how frustrated I was– this was supposed to be my FIRST computer purchase too!  🙁
DH score= 1 point (for being right about why he didn’t want me to get that netbook– oh and he gloated too hahaha).  Mrs. T= zero (plus I was so frustrated because I actually liked the way it looked hahaha). It was then that I realized I am probably not meant to be a Windows OS computer user (sucks coz practically all netbooks in the market are Windows- based). That was July of last year. I buried my frustration and just focused on other things (like not staring at my computer keyboard hahahaha)
Fast forward to today. DH excitedly tells me that Apple will be announcing something– a development of some sort, this coming Wednesday (January 27!!!). There will be an Apple Media Event, which COULD announce the coming of the Apple Tablet (hehehe could they be calling it “I-Pad”?). According to DH, it’s still pure speculation as Apple peeps are very tight- lipped about it .*For more Mac rumors, check out www.macrumors.com hehehe link is courtesy of DH*
Here’s me, EXCITED. I know, right? ME? Excited for a new gadget? YES! Come on, if the device is going to work like a MacBook, I WANT NEED it!!! It’s high time I retire my old I-Book! My trusted white laptop is already almost 7 years old!!! JUST LOOK AT HER *and tell me I don’t need a new computer yet! Hahaha*
I brought this computer to the US and leeched onto the free wifi of Apple stores inside the malls hahaha. Some people bring in their Macs into the store to use Wifi, but I was actually too EMBARRASSED to bring mine in! So I just stayed outside in one of the mall benches *muwahahahaha*
Oye, she may be old, but she is trustworthy 🙂
It has been 6 months since I last expressed the need for a new computer, and this time I really want to make the purchase (usually it’s DH who pays for the tech stuff, but this time, I’m the one saying I will pay for it hahaha). Mac has never disappointed, so hopefully this is THE ONE. I just wonder how much this will cost though… I hope it’s not more than the price of a Goyard ambassade which would fit the Tablet *I assume*

Mac Users, are you peeps excited for the Apple Media Event? Coz I can tell you I can’t wait!!! *giddy with excitement ;)*

  1. HP should have given you a free unit for that dud one ha ha ha! But honestly speaking that’s a blessing in disguise because I had one too but after a month I sold it cause my eyes hurt from the red keyboard!

  2. I’m a Mac addict too, but I have to say that I am both excited and sad about the event. Excited because, well, I love Apple gadgetry! I even name all of my Apple gadgets. Sad because I can’t afford to get anything new. Boohoo! I know that I’ll just drool and cry over all the Mac goodies I cannot have right away. However, I would love to go with you, if you like! Lol. I can shop vicariously through you, or we can just drool together. Hahaha!

  3. I am not an Apple user and have held back on ipods and iphones. I may be the only one left without either. But I heard iphone 4th generation will debut on that press conference. Perhaps this is the time I will make that investment.

  4. @xingkit: Hahaha I want the i-pad. Bugged dh for more info about it. He says If it comes out, he will buy it for me 😉

@christoph riesling: Haha meanwhile I don’t wanna buy a new phone anymore

@marielle: oh! Haha no I paid for my computer but the ad agency was the one I dealt w for payment and discount. I didn’t realize the red keyboard would be a problem!

  5. haha, your old laptop’s keyboard is hilarious!! oo nga, time to ‘retire’ it na 🙂 maybe on your next purchase, you could have the sales people start and set it up for you first at the store so that when you get home you could just go straightaway to using it? that’s what i did when i bought my asus netbook, because i am such a dunce when it comes to computers, even with the manual and everything… and as for windows and viruses, i just had an antivirus program (licensed, ha!)installed (again, by the store people since i have no clue how to do it and my netbook doesn’t have a cd-rom either). so far so good, keeping my fingers crossed 🙂 anyways, good luck with your new purchase! 🙂

  6. @AinaL: gosh I hope the tablet is cheap Hahaha or dh won’t get it for me. He’s willing to spend on gadgets for me, so that’ll be his expense and my reward Hahaha (bad girl Hahaha)

@OD: oh I didn’t even know that! But that was why DH kept dissuading me to buy the netbook.

  7. mac fan here, too! but i’m not really a techie. my hubby usually buys the gadgets for me, too. 😀 i have a notebook (the silver one with the black rim around the monitor) which is almost 2 years old but i would really like to get hold of “that”– whatever it is they will be unveiling in SF by tomorrow! hahaha! got myself an iPhone and Nano with video as well. addict! hihihi!

  8. @Bessie, I saw that too. The dell netbook was about US$525 and the pouch is selling for US$800. LOL

  9. Thanks for the heads up (true or not that is one exciting rumor :). I actually called the hubby immediately, because I too am on the market for a new laptop as some very naughty fingers poured milk over my Mac! Cant’t wait!!!- Patricia

  10. @bessie: oooh but you’re right. thats a LOT of happy meals indeed hahaha!

@Patricia: I can’t wait for this piece of news. One more night and the news comes out! I realllly hope it’s a tablet!!

@browneyedgirl: I’d have done the same but the HP Mini I got was not from the store, but was from the Ad agency who handled HP. I didn’t get that netbook for free– I actually paid for it (just got a discount), so DH was the one who had to start up everything for me. From what I was told though, the HP mini was “Supposed” to be working fine, but the model I got actually had some fingerprints on them when I got it (it was supposed to be new). So I don’t really know the story anymore after I asked the Ad Agency peeps to pick up the HP since I just didn’t want to have anything to do with it (broken hearted hahaha). I’m over it now– so the Apple news better be a tablet LOL or Ill be heart broken again!

@Mrs. Mac: Woohoo Mac fan!!!! 😀 😀 😀 I actually have 2 Mac books– one’s an Ibook and another is a MacBook Pro :)– the larger one stays home

@koolaide: Thanks 🙂 🙂 🙂 I wish I can get my grubby hands on the tablet asap. I have ZERO eq. It’s proven LoL

  11. I can totally relate to your embarrassment hahaha. I’ve had my iBook G4 for 4 years already and it looks so old compared to the new Macbooks. I’m planning to get a new laptop too this year, something Windows-based so that it’s work friendly. I was thinking of getting an HP Mini but got turned off after what happened to you. Thanks for sharing your experience! 🙂

  12. @Joni Andrea: Hahahahaha your ibook and mine must be sisters then 😀 I think when you own a Mac, you can’t really appreciate windows anymore. And yeah, I was really turned off with HP. I own an HP printer/scanner/ fax machine (which to date, I still don’t know how to use. Seriously), but I swore off HP mini netbooks after my experience. My friends said to get a Sony Vaio if you are looking for a WIndows based computer.

@PBB + Bessie: Hilarious. The bags are always more expensive 🙂

  13. hello Mrs T..

me here also a mac user, and so are my kids and jerry.. is the mac tablet rumor true? i had been hearing about it before and i am praying it will be a reality .. i do use (and have) other tablet pcs because of our review work, and it is really a big help.. no more dirty hands from good old whiteboard markers after a lecture or presentation 🙂 … if mac tablet will come it will be a BIG GIFT again to myself… let me know when you had any confirmation …

btw i do have that vivienne tam also.. got one because of the design and lightweight issues.. but it is usually kept in the box hehehe.. so far no problems or maybe because i don’t use much (LOL)

take care and thanks for sharing always!

    docD

  14. Let me try to understand your situation. Maybe the computer you got from that shop or as you say, ad agency (I assume they are also authorized resellers) is a used or to-be-refurbished computer that had a corrupt system as a result of use. Otherwise why would there be fingerprints on a new one? And you said no one set up the computer for you as they would in your local shops. Did you file a complaint to HP about it? Resellers caught selling model units to customers can lose distributorship status. These are your rights as a consumer to complain if you get a lemon. Other brands that operate on Windows are okay. You sure you don’t want to give it a try again?

  15. I’m a MAC convert. Always been a Windows user because of my work but I bought a MAC for my own personal use at home. I love it! 🙂 I have always like Apple products, I also have an Iphone and Ipod too.

HP laptop is a NO NO for us. We have this gigantic HP laptop, cheap but it broke down after 2 years of use, when I say “use”, it was not that often and now it’s just JUNK. They got good printers but for laptop, no no no.

If the new gadget from Apple is really a tablet, oh I would just lust for it. LOL!

  16. Hey, I became a Mac convert four years ago when I got my iBook. I NEVER had any problems with it, that’s why I SUPER love it. 🙂

I recently sold it (I was surprised at how fast I was able to sell it, even if it was already couple of years old) so that I could get the new Macbook.

And just like the iBook, i’m LOVING the new Macbook, which i’ve christened Stefan. hehehe!

re: Apple event, does it have something to do with the tablet? i read somewhere that the last time people got excited over a “tablet” was when god gave Moses two pieces eons ago. LOL!

  17. @Angelo: I love that last part “last time people got excited over a tablet was when God gave Moses two pieces eons ago”. Hahahahaha really good one!! And yes, I think the Mac is hehehe Godsend 🙂 Thank God for Steve Jobs hehehe. I can’t wait. One more night!

@Koolaide: hehehe I seriously don’t have eq. I never did. Sucks to be me hahaha

@mergereview: I’ll have my DH update me about the tablet

@appledumplings: Hahaha we also have one piece of junk computer here in our house, an old PC. Koolaide was right– once you go Mac, you never go back!

@MrsMartinez: hehehe i know, i pity my Mac too. But yeah good luck with that HP 🙂

@Christoph: I got mine not from an HP store– the ad agency is the one that handles the PR of Hewlett Packard Philippines. I don’t think they’d give me a used laptop. Anyway I don’t need to complain about anything because I got my refund. But hmm I don’t remember if I got my cheque back. I told the ad agency rep to tear up my cheque. Haha I’m just glad that’s over with 🙂
