20 Years Ago in Fashion…

… how old were you? A little under 20 years ago, I was 16. I had just began my first year in college in San Francisco then…
Ok. Stop. I don’t want to remember how old I am now and how long ago those college years were hahaha!!
Why the sudden rewind back to the past? Over the weekend, one of the trending topics on Twitter was “SentiSabado” or “Senti Saturday” (Senti is short for Sentimental). So natch, I remembered a lot about those “yesteryears”. It was funny because it was a timely topic since I had just answered interview questions from LOOK Magazine about my having committed a fashion faux pas (I commit them everyday but there was one particular incident some 20 years ago that remains unforgettable). And then  I had a long conversation with a good friend about my current boring, blah, classic, non- experimental style. And then the flashback. I told my friend I wasn’t always “non- experimental” with the clothes I wear. I think by then I could hear my friend’s jaw drop with disbelief *hahaha*.
Yes. I was not all about grays and blacks and whites. In fact, if you have had a conversation long enough with my siblings, you’d know that there was a time they were extremely ashamed of being seen with me because of what I wore *hahahaha!*. Because the only things in color black that I had? Bags!

What was “hot” in fashion back in the 90s?

Gianni Versace!
Bright and loud prints!

Gianni Versace was like the “bad boy” of fashion back in the 90s, and he just sold! And here goes the confession: I was one of those who bought. And my mom was my sponsor and enabler hahahaha 🙂
Yes, I wore very bright colors! And loud prints! A far cry from what I wear now.
Here are some of the pieces from my 90s wardrobe– and yes, I kept them all, although sadly, not everything in excellent condition anymore 🙁 *sad*.
Versace lemon yellow jacket with purple trim *which I unashamedly wore to someone’s lunch wedding reception– with a pair of Versace leather pants which had gold safety pins running down the sides a la Liz Hurley’s Versace dress that made her famous* (Ashamed I wore that to the wedding– that’s my unforgettable fashion faux pas! Either that was a faux pas or I was just way ahead of my time. Ok no. That was an unforgivable fashion faux pas hahaha)
And then there were the Versace printed pants as seen on his ad campaigns
Guess what, I tried this on over the weekend, and it still fits me!!! So now, I have a pair of almost- 20 year old still- wearable Versace pants! Definitely vintage 🙂 I am so glad this pair is still in very good condition. Hehehehe… *evil grin*

Even Moschino joined in on the prints trend!

Versace Jeans Couture graffiti pants which was one of my favorites back then.
I have a few more pairs with prints (oh and who remembers those Versace blue and black jeans? I think that was really the beginning of “designer jeans”!! Oh the memories!!) , and I would’ve wanted to share photos of my leather pants, which I paired with that lemon yellow jacket, but those pants are long gone– I was not able to save them because I had kept them stored inside the garment bag in my parents home for over 8 years without letting it breathe 🙁 🙁 So all I have that “survived” are the gold safety pins!
And then this reversible black/white Versace belt
Today, I am actually glad I kept all those Versace prints (I even have this black skirt with buckles running down the sides somewhere in my closet– that was my very first Versace. But boo, that skirt doesn’t fit me anymore. It’s these birthing hips, I tell you). It’s really nice to have kept pieces by the late Gianni Versace. I still love Versace now,

VERSACE - FLOWER REFLECTION STRETCH SATIN DRESS

but hehe no more sponsor = less money to spend on designer clothes!

How about you? Do you still remember what you wore 20 years ago? And do you still have them with you in your closet? 🙂 Share!
