Travelog: Rings of India

In brightest day, in blackest night, no evil shall escape my sight.
Let those who worship evil’s might, beware my power…
Green Lantern’s light!”

Hehehe… I hankered for a green lantern ring after I watched Green Lantern (haha loser much?)

HOT!

Ok so I watched the movie not because of Green Lantern (who was my brother’s favorite cartoon “hero” when we were growing up), but because of Ryan Reynolds *Hot meter: 10 out of 10!!! LoL omg I sound like a dirty old woman lol*

When we were in India, all those jewels we tried would’ve had us reaching for our credit cards, and we’d have blindly signed our lives away to debt *ahh my old friend! hahaha*. Seriously, it was THAT easy to get carried away (one of our group members did hahaha– and no, it was NOT me, thank goodness! Trust me when I say it wasn’t). But like most of the girls in our group, I did walk away with something. I couldn’t resist. When I saw a green lantern ring I really wanted, I was like, please don’t let the ring break my bank. I really, really want it. I slept over it. Tossed and turned over it. Alas we never went back to jewellery store #1 for it. It was really out of my budget, to tell you the truth.  The emerald of that ring was perfect. Sigh. And then we went to another jewellery store. And I saw “it” again. This time, even more ornately designed than the first I saw. But the stone was not as flawless. It didn’t matter. I figured if it was within the budget I set, I would get it. Because if this were to be sold outside of India, I wouldn’t doubt that the price would easily triple.

So ta-daaah, my “fruits” from India 🙂

I love the intricate details of my “green lantern” ring.

Enameling on gold

There are enamel- covered (meenakari) “carvings” on the sides of the 22k gold ring, a prominent quality of Mughal- period jewellery.  I think this is one of the best “souvenirs” I’ve ever had from a trip. There will be pain on my wallet, guaranteed, but I think this was really worth buying. Like my friend had said, the price would’ve tripled easily outside of India. I think of this as a “real estate” investment haha. A portable one 🙂

Rings from India
The other reddish- pink ring I am wearing, is a ruby cabochon swivel ring. The stone itself swivels 🙂 One of our friends bought the ring before I did, and the more I saw it on her, the more I loved it. So I also ended up getting one on our next visit to the same shop which had them 🙂 The gold is rather soft, so you have to be careful not to dislocate the stone if you swivel it too much (Daphne and I realized how delicate this ring was during our plane ride back to Manila. Eeps!)
If you go to India, be sure to pick up a piece of jewellery– be it a ring, a pair of earrings, or hey why not, a necklace!  India is really a place for fabric and for gems. Promise, you won’t regret the purchase/s  🙂

P.S. If you love the swivel ring above but have no plans to go to India anytime soon, Marie Helene de Taillac or MHT makes very similar pieces, and they are available online at Net-A-Porter 🙂
