I would cringe when I see a beautifully dressed woman in a gown carrying a chunky bag. I would have normally recommend a box clutch, a flat pochette, or a minaudiere for formal occasions. Never really thought that sizable leather bags would work with couture.
Until Elie Saab’s current Haute Couture collection presentation which showcased models in exquisite gowns carrying backpacks.
Take note though, these are not ordinary backpacks– so this doesn’t necessarily mean that you can pair your favorite leather backpack with a gown just because they are the same color. Not so. Elie Saab has carefully designed the sleek backpack to work well with his gowns. And it really did work so beautifully too. The backpack looks clean and sleek, and has nice, soft, rounded edges to give it a very feminine look.
I never thought that I’d find it acceptable to use a backpack with a gown, but Saab’s backpack is the gamechanger. I love the total look here and can’t stop staring at it because it looks very cohesive, as if the backpack really belonged together with the gown. Wow!
